Stephen Root was born was born on 17 November 1951 in Sarasota, Florida, USA. He is the son of Roland Clair Root, a construction supervisor and Leona Estelle. He studied at the University of Florida and after graduating, he pursued his career in acting. He started working in theatres like National Shakespeare Company and Off-Broadway Theatre, and he then also worked for Broadway Theatre. He is the husband of Romy Rosemont and has a teenage son. In 2003, he donated an amount of $100,000 to the University of Florida, the university he studied in. This amount was used to fund an acting studio, which is now known as the Stephen Root Acting Studio.

He made his first on screen appearance in ‘Monkey Shines’ (1998). His role in ‘NewsRadio‘ (1950-1999) gave him the some amount of the desired recognition. He played the role of “Jimmy James“, an eccentric billionaire who owes a radio station in ‘NewsRadio‘. His other most talked about show is ‘King of the Hill’ in which he has lent his voice to “Dauterive” and “Buck Strickland“. In ‘The West Wing’ he played the recurring role of “Bob Mayor“. Some of his memorable films are- ‘Office Space’ (role-Milton Waddams), ‘Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story’ (role-Gordon Pibb), ‘Leatherheads‘ (role- Suds) and ‘Drillbit Taylor’ (role- a Principal). He has also appeared in many films of Ceon Brothers, some of which are- ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’, ‘The Ladykillers’ and ‘No Country for Old Men‘. In ‘Jersey Girl’, a role was specifically written for him by Kevin Smith. He later also worked in ‘Idiocracy‘ and ‘From the Earth to the Moon’ along with Mike Judge. In ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’, ‘CSI‘ and ‘Seinfeld‘ he made guest appearances. He had a role in ‘The Path to 9/11′, ‘Night Court’, ‘Harts of the West’ and ‘In the Heat of the Night’.

He has been a known voice artist and has done voice-over roles in many animated series like ‘Ice Age’, ‘Finding Nemo, ‘Courage the Cowardly Dog’, ‘Chowder‘, ‘King of the Hill’ and ‘Teen Titans‘. He also had the recurring roles in the animated show ‘Tripping the Rift’ and ‘The X’s’. Recently he made his appearance in ‘True Blood’ and ‘Pushing Daisies’.

He was nominated in CableAce Awards in 1996 for his role in The Road to Galveston and in MTV Movie Awards in 2005 for Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. He also was nominated in for an Emmy Awards for his role in ‘West Wing’.

Stephen Root has played the role of “William ‘Bill’ Fontaine Delatour Dauterive” in King of the Hill’ tv show. He is known as “Bill” for short. He is the neighbor of “Hank Hill” and a sergeant barber in the US Army. He is involuntarily celibate and divorced . He remains depressed and is very bulky.
