Stephen Root was born was born on 17 November 1951 in Sarasota, Florida, USA. He is the son of Roland Clair Root, a construction supervisor and Leona Estelle. He studied at the University of Florida and after graduating, he pursued his career in acting. He started working in theatres like National Shakespeare Company and Off-Broadway Theatre, and he then also worked for Broadway Theatre. He is the husband of Romy Rosemont and has a teenage son. In 2003, he donated an amount of $100,000 to the University of Florida, the university he studied in. This amount was used to fund an acting studio, which is now known as the Stephen Root Acting Studio.
He made his first on screen appearance in ‘Monkey Shines’ (1998). His role in ‘NewsRadio‘ (1950-1999) gave him the some amount of the desired recognition. He played the role of “Jimmy James“, an eccentric billionaire who owes a radio station in ‘NewsRadio‘. His other most talked about show is ‘King of the Hill’ in which he has lent his voice to “Dauterive” and “Buck Strickland“. In ‘The West Wing’ he played the recurring role of “Bob Mayor“. He has been a known voice artist and has done voice-over roles in many animated series like ‘Ice Age’, ‘Finding Nemo, ‘Courage the Cowardly Dog’, ‘Chowder‘, ‘King of the Hill’ and ‘Teen Titans‘.
